“The merchant of death” Viktor Bout has been sentenced to 25 years for arms dealing, his weapons caused thousands of deaths around the globe. In the same week two Tunisian young men have been jailed for seven years for posting cartoons of the prophet Mohammad on Facebook. The powers that be must see the irony here; one imprisoned for supplying the world the means to suppress freedom, the others for exercising their right to free speech. This is yet another example of Islamic leaders gagging free speech and governments bending to their will.
This sentence was handed down on March 28 but was not reported until Thursday when bloggers started posting information about the case on the Internet. Those in power trying to hide the story in fear of a back lash?
This is the latest incident there have been many other cases of such clamp downs on images and writings the show or mention Muhammad.
17 September 2005, the Danish newspaper Politiken ran an article under the headline “Dyb angst for kritik af islam” (“Profound anxiety about criticism of Islam”).The piece written by Ritzau illustrated the difficulty he had encountered when trying to find an illustrator prepared to work with Bluitgen on a children’s book he was writing.
The situation and the conflicts between followers of Islam and those of different religions continues daily .I think that a new approach is needed.
Those in power need to remove the religious element from the politics and adhere to the rule of law.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental part of living in any modern society and today we see that freedom being eaten away in an effort to pander to the needs of any one that takes offence at the smallest thing. This covers all things not just religion. We have had “trolling” and other forms of cyber bullying resulting in imprisonment!
This is just crazy computers have a delete button for a reason.
Common sense needs to win out, as the old adage goes “you can please some of the people some of the time, not all of the people all of the time.”
We need to keep a watchful eye on these situations, any reason given to be policing a person expression should be scrutinized or we could very easily find ourselves living in “Stalinism”.
